This Week's Obsession: The Gucci Bamboo 1947

Our co-founders are obsessed with this latest version of the Gucci Bamboo 1947, which of course made us interested to learn more about the history of this Gucci icon.

The Bamboo bag was first introduced by Gucci in 1947, during a time when materials like leather and metals were scarce due to World War II. The bag’s design was inspired by the natural strength and flexibility of bamboo, which was used to create the bag’s distinctive handle. The Bamboo handle was crafted from a single piece of bamboo, which was heated and bent to achieve its signature curve.

Guccio Gucci and his design team created the piece in response to the rationing that occurred during World War II. When materials like leather were in short supply, the Gucci team got creative, importing bamboo from Japan and using it to fashion the distinctive lacquer handles. Similar bags had made the rounds before, but the addition of such an unexpected material made Gucci’s collection notable.

The original Bamboo bag was a small, structured tote made from pigskin leather, with a bamboo handle and a tasseled closure. The bag quickly became a favourite among fashion icons of the time, like Ingrid Bergman and Elizabeth Taylor, who were drawn to its unique design and luxurious materials.

Over the years, the Bamboo bag has undergone several updates and iterations, while still retaining its classic design and iconic handle. Today, the bag is available in a range of sizes and materials, from small clutches to large totes, and from traditional leather to exotic skins like crocodile and python. Despite its many variations, the Bamboo bag remains a symbol of timeless elegance and sophistication. Its distinctive handle is instantly recognisable and adds a touch of exotic flair to any outfit. The bag’s versatility and durability make it a favourite among fashion lovers and collectors alike, with many considering it a must-have accessory.

DURABILITY

One of the most notable features of the Bamboo bag is its durability. The bamboo handle is incredibly strong and resilient, able to withstand years of use without showing signs of wear and tear. The bag’s sturdy construction and high-quality materials make it a long-lasting investment piece, one that can be passed down from generation to generation.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

In addition to its practicality, the Bamboo bag is also a work of art. Each bag is handcrafted by skilled artisans, who take great care in selecting and working with the finest materials. The bag’s design is a testament to Gucci’s commitment to quality and attention to detail, with every element carefully considered and crafted to perfection.

The Gucci Bamboo bag is a true icon in the world of fashion, a timeless accessory that has stood the test of time and remained relevant for over 70 years. Its distinctive design, high-quality materials, and commitment to sustainability make it a symbol of luxury and responsible fashion. Whether carried on the arm of a celebrity like Harry Styles or  Beyoncé or everyday fashion lover, the Bamboo bag is sure to turn heads and make a statement.
