This Week's Obsession: Britain on the Red Carpet

This Week's Obsession: Britain on the Red Carpet

As the British equivalent of Oscars, BAFTA is always the best place to showcase the glamor of sophisticated jewellery. In addition to the gorgeous gowns, sophisticated jumpsuits, and dapper tuxes, A-Listers dazzled in statement-making diamonds, gems, and jewels worth millions on the red carpet outside the Royal Albert Hall.

Brands like Bulgari have also launched a landmark partnership with BAFTA. BAFTA CEO, Amanda Berry OBE said that: ”Bulgari’s passion for cinema complements our partnership perfectly, whilst its exquisite jewellery provides additional glamour to our events. As Official Supporter of the BAFTA Gala, our biggest fundraising event, Bulgari shares our commitment to nurturing and supporting talented individuals to develop careers in the film, games and television industries.”

With the rich history between jewels and the film banquet, here we present you with the highlights of those glamorous items from 2019 to 2022. Follow our journey and see how jewellery choices changed within the years

Highlight of 2022
Theme: Old-Hollywood glamour

Lucy Boynton

Boynton was the epitome of old-Hollywood glamour in a sheer black and white Chanel dress, which she paired with jewelled tassel baubles by Boucheron.

Lady Gaga

She opted for a custom Ralph Lauren gown, which she matched with diamond and emerald earrings and a necklace by Tiffany & Co.

Theme: Colourful Gems

Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Bulgari

Chopra gave us a much-needed colourful BAFTA gem moment with her Bulgari jewels. Serpenti rings were paired with $11,400 Divas’ Dream earrings and a High Jewelry necklace of tanzanites, turquoise, sapphires, and diamonds, set in 18-karat rose gold.

Cocktail ring

Emerald Fennel: The Promising Young Woman director according to Vogue UK said it was especially important to the actor, writer, and director to wear a British brand on BAFTA night. So who did Emerald choose for her jewels? Her dad – jeweller Theo Fennell! We love the fact that Emerald wore her father’s tourmaline, diamond, and aquamarine earrings and cocktail rings to the event!

Highlights of 2020

The theme of BAFTA 2020 was sustainability where celebrities were encouraged to either rewear or hire a pre-owned ensemble.

Rose-cut diamond

Gillian Anderson takes the 2020 #BAFTAs in a Tiffany Enchant® flower necklace in platinum with over 12 total carats of rose-cut diamonds. The star completes her diamond suite with a Tiffany Enchant® bracelet, Tiffany Paper Flowers® earrings and a Tiffany Paper Flowers® ring.

In keeping with this movement towards sustainability Duchess of Cambridge wore an Alexander McQueen gown she had worn to the awards first in 2012.

The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton wears earrings and a necklace from the Alhambra collection by Van Cleef & Arpels.

Coral earrings that highlight sustainability

Zoe Kravitz glowed in coral pendant drop earrings. If you are wondering about the coral earrings and the sustainability theme, these are ethical and sustainable Sardinian coral by Assael.

Highlights of 2019

Diamonds reigned supreme on the BAFTAs red carpet with the stars following the Duchess of Cambridge's example with diamond earrings in every style imaginable.

Michelle Yeoh wearing a Moussaieff diamond necklace and earrings.
But diamonds did rule the event,  she undoubtedly wore the most valuable diamonds of the night. Never one to shy away from fabulous jewels, Michelle stepped out on the red carpet wearing Moussaieff’s eye wateringly valuable 74-carat Natural Fancy Intense Yellow diamond pendant set with another 80 carats of white diamonds likely worth more than all the other jewellery in the Albert Hall. There were of course matching earrings with 17 carats of Natural Fancy Intense Yellow diamonds and a further 7carats of white diamonds.

Lily Collins wearing a Cartier High Jewellery ring made from 18k white gold, sapphire and diamonds earrings made from platinum and diamonds.

Cate Blanchett went for a bejewelled look in a big way with a dress by Christopher Kane featuring outsized gems that matched her bright Pomellato gemstone Ritratto rings at the BAFTAS.

As red carpets drew a great deal of attention from lifestyle lovers, celebrities actually get paid to to wear the jewellery of a certain house, in order to promote the valuable pieces – which works like magic because social media accounts burst with hashtags and captions that highlight the star’s beauty and the glory of the jewels!

Some jewellery houses take the opportunity to showcase new exquisite jewellery pieces on the red carpet, which is a very smart way to see their designs on an A-List celebrity, who is usually given the option to choose between 6 sets of jewellery selected by her stylist. Once all the magic is done and her pictures have made it to every fashion luxury social media platform and so much more, these sparkling pieces, that every woman wishes she owned, are returned to the jewellery houses.

Why let celebrities have all the fun?  Covett was created to add more joy to life by letting you experience the jewellery of your dreams. Our co-ownership and subscription based models allow you to expand your jewellery collection, so you can have your own red carpet moments.
